HOMS Chorus Winter Concerts ~ nothing short of angelic! PALM CITY, FL - On Monday evening, December 14, 2009, the Choral Department of Hidden Oaks Middle School (HOMS) presented its annual Winter Concert. With over 95 angelic voices in four different Chorus programs performing for over 350 people in attendance, the Concert held true to the quality of music education offered at HOMS. The winter concert, “An Adventure in music” under the direction of Natalia Douris, and accompanied by Melanie Steinke, presented ½ hour of classic Christmas carols by the Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Introductions and thanks were presented by Tri M-Music Honor Society members, Madi Walker and Brittany Lustig. The concert actually opened with the Beginning Chorus comprised of over 50 students in 6th grade, performing two technically challenging arrangements. The award-winning Jubilee Singers then performed a several very challenging pieces that left the audience speechless. To conclude the concert, the new HOMS Show Choir performed a very special tribute to the late Michael Jackson. Selections from “The Wiz” included cast, Symone Venter, Michael Arechabala, Daniel Knight, Casey and Connor Morris, and dancers; Amber Hall, Kensley Herbst, Gabby Blanco, and Kiomy Gonzalez. The Hidden Oaks Chorus Boosters would like to thank all of the students and parents for their support, attendance, and participation in the programs. Our special thanks to Palm City Presbyterian Church for use of their facilities and recording equipment. The recording from last year’s Holiday concert has been featured on our local National Public Radio Station, WQCS at Indian River State College.
To all of the "Adopt-a-class" sponsors, community partners, and individual families that have contributed in any form or fashion to ensure that the children are afforded the opportunity to learn and perform with such high-quality ensembles.
We will look forward to many great things from the Chorus Department again this competition season, they have regularly been featured as 'highlighted" guests at State Competitions, and upon the conclusion of their first major performance of the year, I am sure that this year will be no different. HOMS CHORUS PREPARES FOR ANGELIC HOLIDAY SEASON! PALM CITY, FLORIDA – The Holiday rehearsal season has already begun for the Hidden Oaks Middle School (HOMS) Chorus Department, and the students are looking forward to offering another “angelic” performance for the Holiday Season. This year's Holiday Concert will be held on Monday, December 14, 2009, at 7:00 p.m., at Palm City Presbyterian Church on SW Martin Highway as will be open to the public. With over 95 angelic voices in three different Chorus programs performing, we do expect over 350 people in attendance. The Concert promises to hold true to the quality of music education offered at Hidden Oaks Middle School. Natalia Douris, Chorus Director will present the program. It has been a very busy year for the students thus, far! We are very proud to announce and recognize some of the outstanding students that have participated in the audition process, and were accepted to participate in the 2010 All State Conference, January 6-9, 2010, in Tampa:Brittany Lustig, Michael Arechabala, Sarah Brenner, Emily Marshall, and Juliet Sharpe. Additionally, HOMS is sending the most Middle School students to All State out of the surrounding four counties in District 13, congratulations kids! Thanks must also be extended to all of the Tri-M students and parent volunteers that helped during the Round 1 and Round 2 Audtions. Three HOMS students recently returned from the 2009 Male Honor Choir Festival in Lake Mary. Michael Arechabala, Casey Morris, and Connor Morris were afforded the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with Dr. Alan Raines from Baylor College. The studentssaid that the experience was positive and fun, Dr. Raines was, "motivating and a great, funny clinician." Congratulations boys! Additionally, the HOMS Chorus Department is reporting that the first-ever Cheesecake Fundraiser has been a huge success! Over $6,000 has been raised for the program. Congratulations, and many thanks to all the volunteers, students, HOMS PTA, and HOMS faculty that assisted. The funds raised in the only fundraiser for the year will "go a long way" to help with costs to maintain such a high-quality music program, music, entrance fees, transportation fees, and other expenses above and beyonda tighter classroom budget. Gray, Gray graduated from The Citadel in 2004, with a BS in Business Administration. Following four years of school, he served his country in the United States (US) Army. As a lietenant, Gray was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. As a platoon leader, he was responsible for a 40 man Airborne Rifle Platoon. During his time in the Army, Gray planned and led over 250 combat missions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During this time of the deployment he was promoted to the position of the Company Chief Executive Officer and second in command of a 132 man Airborne Infantry Rifle Company. Gray now serves in the US Army Reserves as a Comapny Commander in a training division. While on active duty, Gray was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Ranger Tab, Parachutist Tab, Army Commendation Medal and the Army Achievement Medal. Gray presented some inspiring and challenging thoughts to the students, in closing remarked (paraphrased), "evil in this world is everywhere and will prevail, only if good men and women do nothing." Upon the conclusion of Gray's address, the HOMS Symphonic Band performed a moving arrangement of, "Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa. The presentation continued with a short video prepared by the National Gratitude Campaign, reminding all in attendance, "that it is not about politics, it is about service." For more information about this campaign, please see: www.gratitudecampaign.org The presentation continued with students reading letters, poems and presenting powerpoint demonstrations of the work in appreciation for US Veterans. The HOMS Symphonic Band concluded the presentation with "Marches of the Armed Forces," a very special arrangement that allows for each member of each branch of service to stand and be recognized when he, or she hears the theme song of that branch of service. Our thanks and appreciation to; the VFW Honor Guard, the HOMS Language Arts Teachers, David Dean, Margaret Capley, Deputy Brush, Brian Hunter, Julio Valencia, Wilfredo Sosa, Edward Guerro, Linda Ioannides, and Mike Howard for their efforts in assisting to present this program to the students and community. Hidden Oaks Middle School Chorus Boosters Contact: Natalia Douris - Director, HOMS Choral Department ~ FVA District 13 Chair 2801 SW Martin Hwy Palm City, FL 34990 (772) 219-1655 ext. 33427 dourisn@martin.k12.fl.us http://homschorusmom.livejournal.com Booster Public Relations: Jeannie Ferrara 772-287-7566 jmfministry@aol.com PRESS RELEASE October 13, 2009 HOMS Chorus Cheesecake Fundraiser off to a Sweet Start! PALM CITY, FLORIDA – On October 12th the Hidden Oaks Middle School (HOMS) Choral Department kicked-off their only fundraiser for the school year. The new Cheesecake Fundraiser program will run Oct. 12 - 26 and items will be delivered Nov. 18th (just in time for Thanksgiving). The students are very excited about having the opportunity to offer great items like Reese’s, and Chocolate-covered strawberry cheesecake, as well as cookie dough, and the popular pumpkin roll to the community AND raise much-needed revenue. In past years, the Martin County community has kindly and generously supported the HOMS Chorus Department. This is the only fundraiser that is done for the award-winning HOMS Chorus Department, with your generous support; the students have been featured on WQCS NPR, and performed at; Festivals, Dedication services and Community Concerts. Funds will be used to ease the financial burdens of the parents of chorus students in providing assistance with music, uniforms, competition and festival entrance fees, transportation and many other expenses that the department has been forced to pass along to families with recent budget cuts in education. Additionally, both the Jubilee Singers and the Vocal Jazz Ensembles regularly participate in District, State, and National Competitions. It is through the generous support of our Booster programs, parents, volunteers, sponsors, donors, and the community (like you), that we are able to pay for competition fees, equipment, music, transportation and other necessities to keep these high-quality programs available to our students. Why do we need music education? I believe arts education in music, theater, dance and the visual arts is one of the most creative ways we have to find the gold that is buried just beneath the surface. They (children) have an enthusiasm for life, a spark of creativity, and vivid imaginations that need training...training that prepares them to become confident young men and women. As I visit schools around the country I see a renewed interest in arts education and a growing concern about the negative impact of cutting art and music out of curriculum. The creativity of the arts and the joy of music should be central to the education of every American child. (Source: Richard W. Riley, U.S. Secretary of Education) - Music is Beating Computers at Enhancing Early Childhood Development. Music training, specifically piano instruction, is far superior to computer instruction in dramatically enhancing children's abstract reasoning skills necessary for learning math and science. Learning music at an early age causes long-term enhancement of spatial-temporal reasoning. (Source: Frances Rauscher, Ph.D., Gordon Shaw, Ph.D., University of California, Irvine, 1997)
- Music Enhances Linguistic Skills. Music -- specifically song -- is one of the best training grounds for babies learning to recognize the tones that add up to spoken language. (Source Sandra Trehubn, University of Toronto, 1997)
- America Is a Country Full of Music-Makers. 113 million, or 53% of Americans over the age of 12 are current or former music makers. (Source: 1997 "American Attitudes Towards Music" poll conducted by the Gallup Organization)
- Americans Say Schools Should Offer Instrumental Music Instruction as part of the regular curriculum. 88% of respondents indicated this in a 1997 "American Attitudes Towards Music" Gallup poll. (Source: Music Trades, September 1997)
- Student involvement in extracurricular or cocurricular activities makes students resilient to current substance use among their peers, according to a recent statewide survey of Texas Schools. Secondary students who participated in band, orchestra, or choir reported the lowest lifetime use of all substances. (Source: 1994 Texas School Survey of Substance Abuse Among Students: Grades 7-12)
“Should we not be putting all our emphasis on reading, writing and math? The ‘back-tobasics curricula,’ while it has merit, ignores the most urgent void in our present system – absence of self-discipline. The arts, inspiring – indeed requiring – self-discipline, may be more ‘basic’ to our nation survival than traditional credit courses. Presently, we are spending 29 times more on science than on the arts, and the result so far is worldwide intellectual embarrassment.” - Paul Harvey – syndicated radio show host 2006 Children's Music Workshop• info@childrensmusicworkshop.com • Official CMW merchandise To support the efforts of the Florida Vocal Association, please see: www.fva.org. HOMS Chorus Students Participate in Male Honor Choir! PALM CITY, FLORIDA – On October 9th & 10th three Hidden Oaks Middle School students will participate in the Male Honor Choir workshops and performance at Seminole Community College in Sanford, Florida. Students, Michael Arechabala, Casey Morris, and Connor Morris, were selected to participate in the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity on the merits of their talent, dedication and commitment to better themselves. The Male Honor Choir consists of 300+ boys from around the state, and this is Michael’s 3rd year participating, (he was accepted in 6th grade), which is a prestigious honor. Students are rarely accepted that young. HOMS is very proud of all three of these fine young men. Our thanks and gratitude to the Choral Department at Seminole Community College for their hospitality, and warm reception from the student volunteers who helped guide the Middle and High School students through the campus, lunches, and on with their studies. The two-day workshop and performance is an opportunity of a lifetime for the talented and dedicated students of Hidden Oaks Middle School. Moreover, the students have been diligently rehearsing under the direction of Ms. Natalia Douris for the past several weeks. The students, ranging from 7th to 8th grade, were excited about this opportunity to perform several technically challenging arrangements, and act as the representatives for the award-winning Hidden Oaks Middle School in the Chorus for the Middle School performing ensemble. As an added feature to the educational aspect of this event, each of the Middle School students was also afforded the rare gift of performing with High School students as well. Additionally, select students will also participate Monday, October 26th , in the second round of All-State auditions. Over 75 local, area high school students will participate in the auditions, as well as 10 HOMS students. Thanks are in order for the outstanding example set by the HOMS Tri-M Music Honor Society with their help in hosting the event for the District. HOMS should be very proud! Both annual events represent children auditioning to be considered as the best Middle School and High School student vocal performers in the state. Students who qualify will move forward in the process to have the honor to be invited to perform with the 2010 All State Conference in Tampa early in 2010. Historically, Hidden Oaks Middle School has had excellent representation in both events, and we are confident that with so many hopeful candidates for the All State event, we will again be celebrating the accomplishments of students. In conclusion, the HOMS Choral Department will be kicking off their cheesecake fundraiser, at 6:00p.m., Monday, October 12, 2009, at their Booster Meeting. Parental, student, and community support is greatly appreciated. Thank you for supporting our children. HOMS Chorus Participates in 4-County, Hosts All-State Round 1 Auditions! PALM CITY, FLORIDA – It has indeed been a busy couple of weeks for the awarding winning Music programs and talented students on the Treasure Coast at Hidden Oaks Middle School (HOMS). On Friday and Saturday, September 25-26th, select students participated in the annual Four-County Honor Choir workshops and performance hosted by Indian River State College (IRSC).
Our thanks and gratitude to the Choral Department at IRSC for their hospitality, and warm reception from the student volunteers who helped guide the Middle School students through the campus, lunches, and on with their studies. The two-day workshop and performance is an opportunity of a lifetime for the talented and dedicated students of Hidden Oaks Middle School. Following another intense day of vocal performance techniques on Saturday, September 26, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon, a short lunch break, and more rehearsals from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., the students left campus to dine with their parents and change for the evening performance. Finally, the students performed Saturday, September 26th at the McAlpin Fine Arts Center at the IRSC Main Campus beginning at 7:00 p.m.. The event was free, and open to the public. The Hidden Oaks Middle School Jubilee Singers have been diligently rehearsing under the direction of Ms. As an added feature to the educational aspect of this event, each of the Middle School students was also afforded the rare gift of performing with High School students at this event. Additionally, select students also participated in the All State musicianship auditions that were held at HOMS on Tuesday, September 29th , and the second round auditions that will be held on October 26th. Over 75 local, area high school students participated in the auditions, as well as 10 HOMS students. We have had several parents that have contacted us lately about not receiving e-mails from the Boosters.....please share this message with them: Thanks for contacting us to sign up for e-mail with the HOMS Chorus, please take a moment to sign up at both Web Sites. The Boosters do not send out individual e-mails, except from Donna Tipaldo (the Chaperone Coordinator) and Ms. Douris. The Yahoo! Site is a convenient messaging center for parents, students and volunteers [to avoid bulk mail!!]. Please feel free to browse files, (you can find forms in Word.doc here), photos and receive updated information from the Chorus Director and Boosters.
I have just finished uploading all of the calendars, event information, etc. to the files section. Please remember, this messaging center is private, we do not allow non-Chorus membership, nor is your e-mail address ever shared.
